Life at the Duque-Wilckens lab

Hannahlee loves a good mesentery. Will she found out if mast cells are necessary for the increased risk of socio-cognitive deficits resulting from developmental exposures?

Whenever there is a pretty mast cell image, Taylor’s soul dances. Her project will find out whether mast cells in the brain and meninges have a distinct proteomic profile. So cool!

Hayam is a driving force in the lab. On top of managing all lab related stuff-she is leading a project aimed at understanding the role of brain mast cells during early postnatal development!

Jared is a cell lover. Will he find out whether mast cells can be derived from a new source-the skull bone marrow?

Lab news

  • We had such a great time sharing our mast cell research at Brain night this year!

Not only did we have a very busy booth at Brain Night, but Dr. Duque-Wilckens also gave the keynote lecture! Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/live/sYN_9iPJFkY

  • Lauren’s stunning mast cell images are featured in the "Your Brain on Art" exhibit!

Your Brain on Art reimagines the Gregg Museum’s diverse collection to illuminate the profound insights of Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross’s best-selling book, Your Brain on Art, a groundbreaking work reshaping the realms of neuroscience and the arts. Check out the exhibit!

  • Hayam made us all proud presenting at GliaCamp!

Hayam’s project is investigating the function of mast cells during early brain development. She crushed her presentation at Glia camp, an annual one-day symposium hosted by the Duke Neuroimmunology and Glia Group through the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences.

  • Kudos to our PhD students Jared Franges and Yang Tang won SBN 2024 abstract awards!

Jared Franges and Yang Tang both won the 2024 SBN Abstract Award!

Jared’s abstract: “Perinatal exposure to polybrominated flame retardants results in lifelong inhibition of mast cell functions.”

Yang’s abstract: “Investigating the role of brain mast cells in adult brain physiology and behavior.”

    So proud!

  • Science tree

    Science grandpa?!?

So happy that my PhD advisor and close friend Dr. Brian Trainor got to meet Jared and Yang at SBN this year!
